How Do I Install Software

How do I install software?

Typically, all you have to do is run the set-up program. Usually this is called "setup.exe" but sometimes it is called "install.exe".

To run it, just click on Start|Run and type the path or Browse to the folder where you have the download and double click on the set-up file. Another way is to go directly to the set-up file using Windows Explorer, or by navigating to it via the "My Computer" icon, and double-clicking the set-up file.

One caution: always shut down any programs you might be running at the time (including those running in the background like virus scanners, mouse utilities, and Powertoys). Some installer wizards will actually warn you about this before proceeding.

Programs running when you run your installer may be using system files which need to be replaced or updated by the installer of your new software. If they are in use, they cannot be updated so your installer may return an error and abort, or have some glitches because it did not install all its files correctly.

Installation Tips

  1. Shut off all the anti-virus programs - especially the ones that are on your taskbar.
  2. Make sure you have the serial number and other related materials that you will need.
  3. Make sure you have at least twice the amount of disk space to install the software.
  4. Ensure that your computer meets the specified Minimum System Requirements.
  5. If you have enough experience with installing software, choose custom install to save disk space.
  6. Make sure all your peripherals are well connected and turned on in case the software can detect your computer hardware.
  7. After installing the program, reboot the computer.
  8. Run the program and see if it has any problems.
  9. Read the manual or online help carefully to learn all the feature or settings required.
  10. When in doubt, read the "readme" files which are supplied with practically all software packages. They would contain instructions on how to install the software.
